Quick Reference

Is a set of provisions to ensure that an organization is moving towards ensuring equality of opportunity. It includes the following elements: (a) a statement of the functions and policies that are aimed at ensuring equality of opportunity; (b) a means of assessing and consulting on the likely impact of any proposed policies; (c) a method of monitoring policies for any adverse impact on the promotion of equality; (d) a means of publishing the results of the assessment, consultation, and monitoring; (e) a training/action plan; and (f) a process of review and revision of the scheme. Under legislation in Great Britain, public authorities have a specific duty to devise and implement separate equality schemes covering disability, gender, and race. This places a large bureaucratic burden on some of these authorities, and there is a move to replace the separate schemes with an integrated single equality scheme. [See general equality duty.]
