(1832–1909) or Erban Union naval officer, born in New York City. Erben mostly served blockade duty on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts and the Mississippi River. His most significant postwar service was operational command of the European Station or Squadron (1893–94) with the steel cruiser Chicago as his flagship. During the Spanish-American War (1898), Erben commanded the Patrol Fleet responsible for the Atlantic coastline, which never saw combat.
