Quick Reference

A cult figure worshipped on the Athenian Acropolis, formally identified with Poseidon but often regarded as an early king of Athens. The Iliadic Catalogue knows an Erechtheus who was born from Earth (Gaia), brought up by Athena and installed in her sanctuary, and who is worshipped with sacrifice of bulls and rams; this gives the kernel of his myth and cult.
