Various compounds that (may) improve physical work output and athletic performance: i) products providing metabolic fuels; e.g. glucose or oligosaccharides as a source of carbohydrate, medium-chain triglycerides as a source of fat; ii) products providing coenzymes that might be limiting, such as creatine, creatine phosphate, carnitine, and various vitamins; iii) anabolic substances that may enhance performance by changing body composition, such as protein, hydroxy-methylbutyrate, anabolic steroids; iv) substances that may enhance recovery, such as fluid, electrolytes, and herbal products; v) erythropoietin (training at high altitude) to stimulate erythropoeisis, and so increase oxygen-carrying capacity of the blood.
