Leading movement for Eritrean independence from 1961 through the 1970s. Largely Muslim; received substantial support from Syria, Saudi Arabia, and other Arab states. Although plagued by Eritrea's regional and sectarian divisions, the organization was a catalyst for Eritrean nationalism, and most well-known Eritrean nationalists served in the movement.
