An infectious disease caused by the Parvovirus B19 virus infecting mainly children between the ages of 6 and 10. It is characterized by a bright red painless inflammation on one or both cheeks, sometimes spreading to a faint rash on the body, arms, and legs. It may also be accompanied by influenza-like symptoms including a mild fever and aching joints. The infectious period is 4–20 days before the rash appears. Treatment is symptomatic and infection normally confers immunity.
