A condition defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as ‘A fiery red patch that cannot be characterized clinically or pathologically as any other definable disease’. It has a high risk of malignant change and approximately 50% are carcinomatous at biopsy. It may be interspersed with white areas (erythroleukoplakia). See also leukoplakia.
