Spanish dancer. Though born into a middle-class family he learnt flamenco from gypsies in cafés and at fairs. He then studied in Paris, evolving his own more refined style, and with his partner Carmita García travelled the world, gaining a reputation as the most patrician of all Spanish dancers. He retired from the stage in 1961.
