(b Havana, 1950)
Cuban dancer. He studied with F. Alonso, Joaquín Banegas, Anna Leontieva, Michel Gurov, and Plisetski, graduating in 1968 to become a member of National Ballet of Cuba (with which he had already danced part-time). He was promoted to principal in 1972 and created roles in A. Mendez's La Dame aux camélias (1971) and Albert Alonso's Viet Nam: la lección (1973), among others. He became celebrated as one of Cuba's finest male dancers, and his departure from the island in 1992 was considered a major defection. He joined San Francisco Ballet as principal dancer, eventually becoming senior character dancer and teacher.
