(Britten: Gloriana). Mez. Frances, Countess of Essex. Her husband is a favourite of the Queen, who is jealous of Frances. At a dance in the Palace of Whitehall, the Queen orders all the ladies to change their clothes. Lady Essex's beautiful gown disappears. It has been taken by the Queen, who appears in it looking ridiculous as it fits very badly. Lady Essex's humiliation is equally matched by the Queen's. Created (1953) by Monica Sinclair.
