English soldier, commander of the Roundheads. Although he served Charles I in 1625 he opposed him at the outbreak of the English Civil War and in 1642 was appointed commander of the Roundhead forces, leading them at the Battle of Edgehill. After a number of Roundhead defeats, the New Model Army was organized in 1645 and Essex resigned his command.
