A splint consisting of stainless steel wire, first described by Norman S. Essig, American prosthodontist, passed labially and lingually around a section of the dental arch and located in position by individual ligature wires around the contact areas of the teeth. It is used to stabilize fractured or repositioned teeth and the associated alveolar bone.
