A removable, vacuum-formed orthodontic appliance that fits over the entire arch of teeth and prevents the upper and lower teeth from making contact. It is used as part of orthodontic therapy primarily for retention, but may also be used for other functions such as to produce tooth movement, as a bite plane, as a fluoride or bleaching tray, and in the treatment of temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome.
