Quick Reference

Minor fastday held on 13 Adar, the day before Purim, so called because it is stated in the book of Esther that Esther and her people fasted in order to avert Haman's decree. The fast is not mentioned anywhere in the Talmud. The earliest reference to it is in the eighth century ce. Because of its comparatively late origin, the Codes treat this fast less stringently than the other minor fasts (see CALENDAR).
