Quick Reference

Two parallel glass plates with reflecting surfaces between which light is reflected numerous times before exiting. The effect of interference produces an outgoing beam that contains only a limited range of wavelengths, as in an interference filter. Etalons in which the gap between the plates can be varied to select different wavelengths are used in a Fabry–Perot interferometer.
