A glutathione S-transferase inhibitor and potent loop diuretic (acts on the ascending limb of the loop of Henle and on the proximal and distal tubules). Ethacrynic acid acts rapidly and inhibits reabsorption of a much greater proportion of filtered sodium than most other diuretic agents. Used in the treatment of oedema and oliguria due to renal failure. Has been shown to inhibit signalling by NFκB. Experimentally often used as a chloride pump blocker. TN Edecrin.
