Formal review by a properly constituted group such as an institutional review board (or its equivalent in other countries). It is mandatory that all publicly funded research involving human subjects (participants), research involving human tissues or laboratory animals, and some other kinds of research comply with ethical requirements. These are specified in guidelines, such as those of the National Institutes of Health, and in codes of conduct and guidelines prepared by professional organizations, such as the American Public Health Association.
