ethnic stereotypes

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

*Representations of a group identified by an ethnic label (such as Jews) which reproduce the most frequently represented traits associated with such groups. Selective perception or salience tends to reinforce such stereotypes by drawing attention to examples confirming it and blinding the observer to individual differences. So too does the imagery of mass-media entertainment genres. In popular usage, ethnicity is a euphemism for race, and such stereotypes are often racial stereotypes (see also racism; stereotyping).
