Quick Reference

Correct behaviour, good manners; Heb. derekh eretz, ‘the Way of the Earth’, that is, how people on earth ought to conduct themselves. The term ‘the Way of the Earth’ suggests that the rules of decent, courteous conduct are not specifically Jewish but belong to humanity as a whole and are appreciated by all human beings without the need for them to be revealed as the precepts of the Torah are revealed to Israel.
