A genus of clump-forming palms that have a stout, branched, underground rhizome and mostly stemless rosettes of spiny, pinnate leaves. Most of the trees are massive. The inflorescence is tall and narrow. The flowers are paired, 1 male, 1 female, the petals woody, long, and pointed. The ovary has 3 ovules, which are incompletely trilocular. The fruits are finely scaly, and the outer fibrous and inner stony walls have a basal pore. The fruit contains a single seed. There are 7 species, occurring in rain forests of Malaya and Borneo.
