(Aurich, 1846–1926, Jena), a German philosopher who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1908. He wrote no works of literature. His philosophical treatises include Die Einheit des Geisteslebens in Bewußtsein und Tat der Menschheit (1888), Der Kampf um einen geistigen Lebensinhalt (1896), Der Wahrheitsgehalt der Religion (1901), and Der Sinn und Wert des Lebens (1908).
