A genus of trees of shrubs in which the leaves are opposite, usually with 3 leaflets, and are aromatic when crushed. The fruits are follicular (see follicle), with black, glossy seeds. There are about 100 species, occurring in the Mascarenes, and from Indo-Malaysia to China and the Pacific islands.
