Quick Reference

Dollars deposited in financial institutions outside the USA. The eurodollar market evolved in London in the late 1950s when the growing demand for dollars to finance international trade and investment coincided with a greater supply of dollars. The prefix ‘euro’ indicates the origin of the practice but it now refers to all dollar deposits made anywhere outside the USA. See also eurocurrency.
