poet laureate from 1718 until his death. He had celebrated the marriage of the duke of Newcastle, who gave him the laureateship. Pope refers to his notorious drinking habits in The Dunciad (Bk I. 293):Know, Eusden thirsts no more for sack or  praise;He sleeps among the dull of ancient days.
