(1790–1866), superintendent of the Trigonometrical Survey of India. George Everest was born in Greenwich, England, on July 4, 1790, the third of six children of Lucetta Mary and William Tristram Everest. He was educated at the Royal Military College, Marlow, and at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich. It appears that he may have pronounced his name “Eve-rest.”
