English diarist and writer. He is remembered chiefly for his Diary (published posthumously in 1818), which covers most of his life, describing his travels abroad, his contemporaries, and such important historical events as the Great Plague and the Great Fire of London. He was also a pioneer of English forestry and gardening, and a founder member of the Royal Society.
