An American geophysicist and oceanographer, Ewing developed offshore seismic reflection profiling for use in oil prospecting in the 1930s. In the post-war period he made extensive studies of the structure of the floor of the Atlantic ocean, using seismic refraction, sediment cores, etc. Ewing was instrumental in making the Lamont–Doherty Geological Observatory a leading research centre.
