1 In schools and colleges, the assessor responsible for marking external examinations and other assessments. They are external in that they represent the awarding body and not the institution in which the candidate has been taught.

2 In higher education the external examiner's role is to ensure that standards of achievement are being maintained in line with those in other institutions, and to this end an academic from another higher education institution is usually chosen for this role. In the examination of candidates for a doctorate, the external examiner is selected in their capacity as an authority in the candidate's field.
