Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

The temporary display in a given location of a selection of artworks or artefacts. The very first exhibitions of *‘Old Masters’ were held in Rome and Florence in the 17th century. By the 19th century exhibitions had become one of the great cultural phenomena of their age, typified by the various and startlingly ambitious World Exhibitions held in Europe and America. Exhibitions retain their allure to this day, though some have argued that the rigours of transport and international tours pose too great a risk to the chosen exhibits.
