The region downstream of a localized wind-speed maximum in a jet stream, where the air is decelerating. This causes divergence in the left half of the exit region (in the northern hemisphere), compensating upward motion in the underlying troposphere, and convergence at the surface. The opposite effect occurs in the right half of the exit region, and the combined overall vertical circulation tends to promote frontogenesis, i.e. the formation of frontal systems.
