A β-chemokine (CCL21, EC, SLC, CKb9, TCA4, 6Ckine, SCYA21, MGC34555, 134 aa) that is a ligand for CCR7 and is chemotactic in vitro for thymocytes and activated T cells, but not for B cells, macrophages, or neutrophils. Shows preferential activity towards naive T cells. May play a role in mediating homing of lymphocytes to secondary lymphoid organs. Unusually, also reported to be a functional ligand for endogenously expressed CXCR3 in human adult microglia. A potent inhibitor of the proliferation of normal haematopoietic progenitors.
