expiratory mechanism

Quick Reference

Mechanism by which air is forced out of the lungs. During forced expiration, the diaphragm muscles relax, and the ribcage moves downwards and inwards (a movement brought about by contraction of the internal intercostal muscles). These actions combine to increase the intrapulmonary and pleural pressures, forcing air out of the lungs. See also inspiratory mechanism.
