In small arms, a device for withdrawing a cartridge case from the chamber. In automatic and semi‐automatic weapons, the extractor may take the form of a ‘claw’ attached to the breech block, which engages the case's extractor groove when the breech is closed; or may be a movable portion of the barrel's rear face.
