Quick Reference

The fluid which accumulates in tissues or in body cavities as a result of altered vascular permeability in the inflammatory response. Cells, particularly leucocytes, also migrate into the inflamed tissue and may be present in large number in the exudate. A peritoneal exudate induced by saline with complement-activating glycogen is an experimental source of large numbers of neutrophil leucocytes, if drained in the early stages of inflammation, and of mononuclear cells at later stages.
