Quick Reference

(1865–1962). Slovenian architect. A pupil of Otto Wagner in Vienna, from 1899 he was a senior member of Wagner's office, and was mostly responsible for the Portois & Fix Department Store (1899) and the Artaria Apartment Block (1900), both in Vienna. As personal architectural adviser to the heir to the throne, the Archduke Franz Ferdinand (1863–1914), he had considerable influence. Most of his important buildings, however, were designed after the 1914–18 war in Ljubljana and Trieste, and he prepared master-plans for Ljubljana, Gorizia (near Trieste), and elsewhere.
