facilitator neuron

Show Summary Details

Quick Reference

A neuron that enhances the effect of a second neuron on a third, thereby modulating the system. In the well-studied examples in invertebrates the facilitator neuron synapses with the second (sensory) neuron near the axon terminal and modifies the ion channels (in some cases by phosphorylation) so that larger depolarizations occur and more neurotransmitter is released from the sensory neuron.
