Quick Reference

(1818–66), English genre painter. He produced fictional mises-en-scène from works by English poets, a series of which, entitled Passages from the Poets, included scenes inspired by Shakespearian drama. The works display little artistic accomplishment, but were engraved and published in weekly magazines, serving to broaden the popular appeal of the works they illustrated.
