Quick Reference

Literally ‘phalanxism’, a right-wing Spanish movement that developed in the early 1930s under the leadership of José Primo de Rivera, and sought to reproduce German and Italian fascism in Spain. Opposed to the Republican regime, it supported Franco's Nationalist coup of 1936, but became only a minor element in his regime.
