(1825–89), great-grandfather of William Faulkner and prototype of Colonel Sartoris, was a Mississippi army officer, lawyer, and railroad builder, and author of The White Rose of Memphis (1880), a popular melodramatic novel; The Little Brick Church (1882), a reply to Uncle Tom's Cabin; and Rapid Ramblings in Europe (1884).
