A clear, approximately circular or elliptical patch in thin stratiform cloud (particularly altocumulus or cirrocumulus). If glaciation is initiated over a relatively restricted area, the ice crystals fall out as virga (fallstreaks), leaving a sharply defined hole in the sheet of cloud.
