A new syncretistic religious movement founded in China in 1992 by Li Hung-chih, which blends together elements of Buddhism andTaoism in order to generate a spiritual awakening similar to the Buddhist experience of bodhi. Followers seek to cultivate moral values such as honesty, truthfulness, patience, and goodwill, which they believe will free them from rebirth as well as cumulatively transforming society. The movement, which has some 15 million members, has been persecuted by the Chinese government and many of its leading members are in prison. Li Hung-chih fled the country and now lives in New York.
