Amer. soprano. Début Columbia Broadcasting Co. 1941, after which she had her own prog. for 6 years. Sang Marie in concert perf. of Wozzeck, NY 1951. Stage début 1956 in Tampa, Fla. S. Francisco 1956; NY Met 1960. Sang Brünnhilde and Isolde in concert perfs. with L. Bernstein. Also gifted singer of blues, Gershwin, etc. Prof. of mus., Indiana Univ. Sch. of Mus., Bloomington, 1971–80, Univ. of Me. in Orono from 1984.
