Farrell was born 9 May 1926, and died at Cambridge on 27 October 1975. He was educated at King Edward V School, Sheffield and Read politics, philosophy and economics at New College, Oxford (BA 1949,t MA 1953). He married Margaret Bacon in 1952; they had five sons. In 1957 Farrell contacted polio which paralyzed and crippled him.
