The post-translational modification of a protein by the enzymatic addition (by farnesyl transferase, EC 2.5.1.58, 379 aa) of a linear grouping of three isoprene units, a farnesyl group, that probably acts as a membrane-attachment device. Only proteins with a C-terminal CAAX motif become farnesylated.
