Amer. soprano. Début, Berlin Court Opera, 1901 (Marguérite in Faust). Monte Carlo 1904–6. Sang Mimì and Gilda (Rigoletto) to Caruso's Rodolfo and Duke on several occasions. NY Met début 1906; sang Butterfly at its first Met perf. 1907. Member of Met co. until 1922, singing nearly 500 times. Created Suor Angelica (NY 1918). Last appearance 1922. Also appeared in many films. Wrote biography Such Sweet Compulsion (NY 1938, 1970).
