The protrusion of muscle through a discontinuity in the connective tissue surrounding the muscle. The protrusion occurs when pressure increases in the muscle. It is sometimes painful. A fascial hernia commonly affects the tibialis anterior muscle in the lower leg. The protrusion can be felt as a definite bulge on the surface of the muscle during or immediately after exercise, and a hole can be felt in the fascia when the muscle is relaxed.
