Quick Reference

An accelerated professional development programme for teachers which prepares them to progress to positions of leadership in school within four years. Such a position may involve school management, such as that of head or deputy head, or may be concerned with leadership in professional development, such as an advanced skills teacher post. The Fast Track training lasts up to five years and is aimed at teachers in the early years of their career who demonstrate the potential to benefit from such a programme. They must hold qualified teacher status, be teaching in a maintained school in England, be registered with the General Teaching Council for England, and not yet have reached the threshold on the teachers' pay scale. Applications are considered on a case‐by‐case basis by the National College for School Leadership. The programme, which began in 1999, was first announced in the 1998 Green Paper Teachers: Meeting the Challenge of Change.
