German cardinal. He became Abp. of Munich in 1917 and was created cardinal in 1921. In his earlier years he made some important contributions to patristic studies; later he was the leader of the right-wing German Catholics and, though originally impressed by Hitler, he became an outspoken critic of the Nazis.
