A protein motif (~50 aa) generally found in the N-terminal half of proteins and involved in protein–protein interactions, particularly linking proteins with the ubiquitin-driven proteolytic system. The motif is present in several eukaryotic regulatory proteins, e.g. SCF ubiquitin–ligase complexes, and at least 38 human F-box proteins are known. F-box proteins often have other motifs potentially involved in protein–protein interaction, particularly WD and leucine-rich repeats.
