A solution used to differentiate water-soluble aldehyde and ketone functional groups. A red precipitate of cuprous oxide indicates the presence of an aldehyde, whereas most ketones do not react. Used to detect glucose in urine as a test for diabetes but now largely superseded by Benedict's solution.
